USA Baby Names Insights
Popularity over time
Counts show the number of reported births. Prevalence adjusts for the changing number of births each year.
Similar popularity trajectories
Names whose popularity rose and fell at similar times.
How is a name’s “core era” defined?
We smooth the selected name’s combined prevalence over five years, then use the period from its first to last year at or above 10% of its peak popularity. Shorter periods are expanded to at least 15 years. Correlations are calculated only within that selected name’s window, so the results are directional: one name may rank among another name’s top matches without the reverse being true.
Gender lean over time
Female and male shares sum to 100% in every year with reported usage. The stacked background makes the name’s changing lean visible at a glance.
Starting-letter prevalence
The share of female and male babies whose reported name begins with the same letter. The dotted line marks the all-years median across the 26 starting letters. Explore the broader patterns in the USA Baby Names Analysis.
